Supply list for Students/Robedee Shibori Retreat
All Indigo and vat chemicals will be included but students should bring the following:
Miscellaneous:
Extra long rubber gloves (elbow length/26-28 inch is best, others work okay)
A N-95 or KN-95 mask (for mixing vat chemicals)
Your favorite hand lotion
Thread:
100% polyester thread of at least 3 various colors (preferably neon). I buy this Selric Marine Grade Sailboat thread from Amazon – which is completely amazing and I highly recommend. If you cannot source this, I will provide it in class, but you should buy some thread to bring as long as it’s a standard thickness, 100% polyester you should be okay.
Needles, thimbles, and finger protection:
Hand sewing needles of various sizes (I prefer sashiko needles)
For large stitches I recommend getting doll sculpture or soft sculpture needles. I purchase Dritz brand on Amazon- but you can get this brand other places.
Sashiko thimble, I would like you to try this method of stitching which is faster. If you don’t like it, please bring your favorite thimble style.
Finger protection for tying a lot of threads. I recommend these Mr. Pen Hot Glue Protectors.
Fabric:
Indigo will only dye natural fibers: 100% cotton, silk, rayon, wool, and linen. NO SYNTHETIC FABRIC.
At least 4 yards of white cotton fabric for samples and your final project.
Due to the size of our vats your final project cannot be bigger than approx. 1 meter x 1 meter and we must do it in cotton for the best results. Other samples and projects can be in any fabric you want. You will probably want silk, linen, or rayon scarf blanks, blank t-shirts, and various other items. Keep in mind that it’s better to have more fabric than you think you need. You will be eager to dye! You are welcome to bring pre-prepared work if you have it. But we will prioritize our in class projects for vat time.
